It was a pleasure and privilege meeting you and your pet-kids Saturday. I can’t stop telling the story of my first interaction with your pet-kids, the compassion and the love in their eyes. My most memorable moment, sorry I don’t recall which, when one of your pet-kids backed right into me and plopped their soft as heck furry head on my arm while their sibling came to give me a kiss head on and knocked me back while Sarah was taking pictures. Steve was kind enough to share your Web site link with me. I am still working my way through the story of Shadow. I must tell you the tears in my eyes and the joy in my heart holding onto each word. WOW! What Shadow brought to the two of you and the love you continue to share with your pet-family; inspiring. My heart goes out to you but remember to win the fight you need to keep the faith, keep the spirit high (and not just Spirit’s that is), and keep on doing what you do; from what Steve shared you both are angels from heaven sent to help those four legged friends in dire need. Keep sharing and spreading the love to all you touch. Best regards for the ultimate success, Brian Wagner

What a cruel sick person !!

In doing research for a paralegal course, I came across the story of SHADOW. It has made me cry for the senseless death of a beloved pet. I have always felt that the law was wrong to consider companion animals as property; they have feelings and are able to get emotionally attach to their human companions. I am very glad and encouraged by the stand of Mr. and Mrs. Scheeles and encourage them fully. I am very touched by their love to their pet and feel very sad for their unnecessary grief. If laws were passed recognizing that pets are worthy of respect on their own right; that they have families who care and love them and that their loss cause so much grief, then they would be raised to a different level in the eyes of those who may wish to do them harm. I also believe that if the law made hurting a pet a felony, that would deter also crime against them. I will be following this case with great interest and wish to encourage Mr. and Mrs. Scheeles in pursuing this matter until the courts make laws that reflect the public sentiment . Sincerely, Marie Vela

My prayers are with you both and your living baby. I don't know how someone could do that to any animal. As I have gotten older, I realize how nasty and hateful some people can be to dogs, cats, and all animals. I don't call them human, as a matter of fact, to me they are just scum and should suffer like they made the innocent animal suffer. You have my support in the hopes that the law should be change to consider our pets as part of our family, not just something to have around. If you need anything signed, please let me know. Keep fighting for Shadow, if though I not it has been hard on both of you and I am sure that your other dog misses Shadow very much. I have one dog and two birds and they are part of my family and I would not have it any other way. May God help you in this quest and help keep you both strong to continue the fight. My thoughts are with you both. Sincerely, Linda Schoene rebam717@aol.com

I have suffered the death of a beloved dog in the same exact way, and it truly broke my heart to read your story. It was many years ago, but I suffered immensely over the loss. I couldn't have children and developed a profoundly meaningful relationship with my dog. It took me years to recover. The person who shot my dog was never charged. Kind regards, Kathryn Radeff

Hello. We just heard about your story and want to give you our support. You are doing something GREAT and you will make this world a better place to live for all of us. Thank you and good luck. Mike

You guys are awesome! We met you at a recent SPCA event. What you are doing to bring awareness to the courts that the true value of companion animals is not mere property...but members of the family...is wonderful. We totally support you and are willing to help in any way that we can. You guys rock! Thanks for what you are doing!

Dear Senator, I am ashamed to hear this that you consider dogs mere property. I have dogs and I love them so help me God. I am a doggy lover if there ever was one and I thought that shooting an animal was animal cruelty. If not, I have no idea why we do not just shot are dogs when they are seriously hurt or something instead of "wasting" money on them. If someone takes what does not belong to them than isn't that stealing? I do believe you get sent to prison, or are they just set free? I bring that up because it is almost the same here, a man (woman) has taken the life a dog (that was doing no harm to anyone). I hope this helps with a law to be passed that dogs are not just mere property and if they are, then there is no need for the animal cruelty cops because the dogs are just mere property. Wouldn't you agree? Yours Truly, Rachel

Sarah and Denis, We don't know how to express how sorry we are for your loss. From everything we read and saw, we know that Shadow was the love of your life, made your life whole, and was very, very special. We know this, not only because of your words and pictures, but because we had our Shilo. She was the love of our life. We lost her too early, tragically from brain cancer at the age of eight, but cannot, just cannot imagine what you went through losing Shadow the way you did. We agonized, we cried, we hurt, we were numb, we were angry, we were sad, we have experienced a loss like no other, and we are still grieving, every day, and I don't think any other loss will be the same...but still, it was not due to the harsh brutality you had to see and endure. We are so, so sorry for your loss. Our lives are enriched by knowing you. Robin & Karen

I just stumbled upon this website and thought I'd send a letter as I was so moved by Shadow's story. Giving two beautiful dogs a wonderful life is a very noble thing to do. Although Shadow is gone, you gave him so much love, affection and parenthood in those 4 short years that it surpassed what most would be given in a lifetime. Justice for everyone and anyone must always be done, and until there is love for everybody - in the true sense of the word everyBODY - on earth, it will not be a nice world to live in. I'm so sad to hear about your grief for your child and hope that you find support in each other and outside, and that you are strong for Lucy's sake so that she too can grieve, recover and live a different but happy life with you.

I am so terribly sorry for the loss of your beloved child Shadow. It deeply saddens me that there is so much cruelty and ignorance in mankind. May he always dwell in your heart and may you find some sort of comfort in knowing that he was LOVED by such a wonderful, caring and nurturing family. Sincerely, Lisa M Koehl (Someone who cares)

My Name is Constance Anderson, I live In Tennessee and I am appalled that this goes unpunished. I am so tired of people not being held responsible for their actions. That is why we have the troubles we have in this country. Everyone has some kind of snydrome that makes them not responsible for what they did. I have Sasha 8yr. old German Sheperd, Cringer 4 yr. old Min. Yorkie, Floyd 4yr.old sable ferret, Crash, 5 month old Cinnamon ferret, Eddy 5month old Sable ferret and they are all my companions and I love them like they were one of my children. All my children are grown and they love animals like they were their best friends. They all have companion critters and would be devastated if something like this happened. Laura Bush would be devastated if someone did this to their Scottish Terrier Barney I am sure they think of him as their companion and I am sure that if it did happen the law would be changed. Maybe you should write Barbra Bush she seems like a person who would help. I hope and pray that this person is punished and that you get this law changed in Shadow's memory! Maybe you should go to care2.com and start a petition and get as many signatures as you can I know I could get a lot of people to sign it. Please let me know if you would interested in doing this so I can sign it and pass it on. My email is bearfoots_1@bellsouth.net. God Bless and our companions deserve the same justice as humans. Sincerely, Constance Anderson

Hi! I would like to send my support to shadow's adopted parents , his sister Lucy, family and friends! The man responsible for this kind of murder is not a happy person and some day something bad will come to is life. Who lives and act with negatives attitudes will receive them in return, sooner or later. Hope justice will be made for such a cruel act! Sincerely, Carla Marques Portugal

I can only hope that the murderers get what they deserve. I feel so sorry for you! I cannot imagine the heartache and the grief you must be going through.

I support you in everything you're doing. I truly understand your loss and am willing to do whatever is necessary to get legislation passed to protect our family members from being treated as property. Please tell us, what can we do to help? Also, in addition to having legislation passed to create the companion guardian status, I believe that the pellet gun or bee-bee gun should be reclassified as a gun, not a toy. I recently rescued a cat from a drain gutter that had been shot and left to die. By the time I found her, the best we could do was put her out of her pain but what about the others? The examining vet said he sees hundreds of pellet gun injuries to animals every year. If that man had had to have a license for that shooter, maybe he wouldn't have had the gun and used his voice instead! Kat McAfee, Princeton, NJ

Two years ago my neighbors 3 pit bull dogs came into my yard, picked up my 5 lb. Chichuchu off my door steps and played ball with her while my husband was running and shouting at them. After Emergency surgery on a weekend, 7 days in the hospital and a huge vet bill, my Sassy died. The Vet wrote that the dogs ruptured the sac around her heart, plus other large ripes to her little body was the cuses of death. Because there is no leach law, where I leave, The police will not do anything nor will the DA's office. The sad part, I lost my baby, my grandson saw it and I'm still tormented by the same dogs when I go to the mailbox or take by garbage to the road. My heart goes out to you and yours due to the lost of a loving {child} pet. R. Horton Oneonta, Alabama

Dear Scheele's, I am teary as I read your story. I found your page after watching an appalling video of a cat in a machine called The Pet Spa. Honestly I feel like it is my life's calling to provide justice for those who can't do it for themselves. If only all the ignorant and uncaring people in the world were silenced, and we could get legislature passed to protect the animals and punish the persecutors. I am 18 years old, and plan on double majoring in Veterinary Medicine and Communication Studies. Even if I cannot be of assistance to you, I plan on working for your cause for the rest of my life. Sincerely, Alana Peden Kingwood,Texas

I am so sorry for your loss you best friend rit a santoy

I live in Vermont. I also lived in Wyoming, where it was legal for a dog to be killed by cattle owners if the dog was seen chasing their cows. Fortunately, our neighbor gave our dog the benefit of the doubt (she did accidentally break away from her tie-out) and notified us that she had been chasing his cows. But he had a legal right to kill her on the spot, if he so desired. Also, before got a cap on the back of my pickup truck, my dog was sitting in the back, minding her own business, when someone approached her and tried to pet her. She did not bite him, but he was angry that she snapped at him. Unfortunately, again, according to the law, the dog would have been found to be at fault. (Any sensible person would know not to approach a strange dog, especially one protecting property.) My dogs, too, are my adopted children. And, when each one of them died, I felt more grief for them than my own parents. After all, my parents were adults who made their own poor decisions about their health. I am my dogs' caretaker. It pains me to think that I am unable to protect them from the world, just as I would if it were a human child. Bravo to you for doing what you can to change the way ignorant people think about our precious loved ones. Sincerely, A dog owner and concerned Vermonter, Lee Underhill, Vermont

wow poor shadow it is said to loss a family member love your best friend Rita Santoy

I'm so sorry but I know how it feels to lose a fried. I lost my dog too and I'm still crying for her. She used to sleep with me and play with me. She used to make me laugh and smile with.your friend samantha santoy

SORRY FOR THE TRAGEDY OF SHADOW. I HAVE LOST A PUG THAT WAS RUN OVER BY A VAN. KNOW THE FEELING OF LOSING A FRIEND

Dear Sarah and Dennis I am so sorry for your loss I am only 9 years old my name is Rita and I undrestand what you are going through because I felt the same way you did when I loss my dog. I wish I new who ran over my dog. your friend Rita santoy

Dear Sarah and Dennis I am so sorry for your loss I am only 9 years old my name is Rita and I undrestand what you are going through because I felt the same way you did when I loss my dog. I wish I new who ran over my dog. your friend Rita santoy

I know how it is to love a pet like my own child (I am childless myself). Mimi (my 9 yr. old cat) is my baby. I love her so much she even got pet insurance (VPI) although it's hard on my budget. The laws of this land should change regarding beloved pet animals. They are not merely objects but God's creatures who are intelligent and capable of giving so much love, happiness and tenderness. I will continue to pray for this to St. Francis--- Justice for Shadow.

After watching your last interview, I pulled out a book, Lost History of the Canine Race by Mary Elizabeth Thurston. She traces the history of dogs and our relationship with them. After 15,000 years, I think it is time to realize that dogs are not the same as personal property! I think "Shadow's Law" is really important and the time has definitely come. I appreciate that you are speaking out on behalf of dogs. Susan Glasgow

Hello my dear friends, As always you and yours are in my thoughts. It is now another year and my heart continues to ache for you in your loss of dear SHADOW. I am constantly wondering if we would have met if not for this tragedy. What I do know is that Sarah and Denis Scheele are 2 very remarkable, compassionate and courageous people. Your tenacity, your courage to stand up for what is right, your love for your fur babies, family and friends is amazing. I am proud and honored that you are my friends and I truly consider you my family. Please know that I continue to support your efforts and will continue the fight along with you. I also have forwarded the CBS link to Kinship Circle and my friend Brenda, who helped me get the letter writing campaign off the ground and going strong! Right to Vermont, where we needed it most! To my dear friends, Happy New Year. You will win for SHADOW! You already have in my eyes! Madeline Davis www.tails-of-hope.org "Fur Paws Sake" Annapolis, Md.

poor shadow I can not belive that a man whoud killA poor dog. I also did not know that youfeel the same way I fet when my dog.I whis I knew who killed my dog. I did not even know shadow and I know that he was a nice dog, and had a huge heart full of kindness and love for you and shadow's dad and lucy

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Scheele, Thank you for speaking up for our companion animals. Clearly you are wonderful people and all of us who cherish our "companion animals" appreciate your efforts for all animals. Good luck!

Dear Sarah and Dennis: I saw you today on the CBS Morning show. Good job in helping to bring Shadow's Law to the forefront and reading all the supportive emails makes me feel like you are really making a difference. Its hard to believe the difference one dog and two people will make in this situation, but you are forging the way. Your story was very touching on TV this morning and although I have spoken to you personally and through email before, I believe that the national attention will really help your cause. Good luck and let me know what I can do in Florida. Still there for you and for the animals. Lizanne www.harmonyTouch.com

I totally agree pets are more than property. My mom calls our pets little people with fur. They have feelings and love us as well. We should hold them in the same regard as they hold us, for without us they would not survive and all they ask for in return is our love and protection. Please let me know how this turns out, we seriously need to change the law across the country. Denise Dallas, Tx dhall_6@yahoo.com

Dear Shadow's family, I cannot even begin to say how sorry I am to hear about your loss. I started watching the video on Comcast and immediately started to cry. I have a dog of my own, Jessie. She puts so much joy into our lives, as I could imagine Shadow did for you all. I looked online to find a web page to learn more about Shadow. I want to let you know that I have so much sympathy for you all. I hope that everyone in the world could realize how much animals contribute to our lives. Unfortunately, not everyone has the heart like you guys do. I think that it is a great thing what you are trying to do for shadow. I am still sitting here crying, acting like I knew Shadow. Hopefully your other babies will cheer you up and help you through a tough time. Shadow is with you guys still, as you could see through your new joys in life. I hope everything turns out for the best. All of my confidence is with you guys. I know you could change our government-which is long overdue. Continue to fight, as I continue to pray for you all and Shadow! I cannot wait to hear when you win your case!! Take care!

I am a teacher in California. I have two dogs, and I plan to make a contribution to the legal defense fund of Shadow's family so that this case can be heard in the Supreme Court if necessary. A pet owner must have the right to sue over "emotional damage" and "loss of companionship." Jeff Myers San Pedro, CA

I was saddened to read of your story on the CNN webpage today. I own a boxer...Ruby, she is just over a year old and sounds very much like Shadow. She "talks" to me often and only barks when she wants to come in from the backyard. There is not an aggressive bone in her body. I cannot begin to imagine the pain you must have endured at Shadow's loss. I understand your mission and support your efforts to gain legal recognition that our pets are an integral and very important part of our families. Even medical research has demonstrated the importance of pets in our improved health. You often see stories of dogs going to hospitals to visit sick people and the positive effect these visits have. That does NOT happen with any other "property" I know of. I hope you are successful in your efforts. respectfully, Ken Kaiser (and Ruby)

I am so very sorry for your loss. What a senseless tragedy. I don't understand how people can be so heartless and cruel. My heart goes out to you. Robert Boatright (Cottonwood Heights, Utah)

I think the days of shooting "stray" animals that land on your property is long gone. I can't believe that the person that took Shadow's life didn't even consider that he was someone's beloved pet. I think that your action with a lawsuit is absolutely justified and I would do the same thing if someone did that to one of my babies, Frasier and Scout. I support you 100% and I hope you get the justice you're seeking. Shawna Yeats Irving, Texas

WHAT A SAD STORY, AS A PET OWNER I CANNOT IMAGINE SOMETHING LIKE THIS HAPPENING TO MY "LITTLE BELLE". THIS MAN THAT TOOK SHADOW'S LIFE SHOULD PAY FOR THE GRIEF THAT HE HAS CAUSED. HE IS A COLD BLOODED KILLER. I AM VERY SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS AND MY HEART GOES OUT TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY. GOD BLESS YOU SHADOW YOU WERE A BEAUTIFUL PUPPY.

i am so sorry for you guys they are so cute

I'm another person who cried for shadow. - Lizzie (Baltimore, Maryland)

I just read your story. I'm so sorry. I'm shocked there aren't laws in Vermont against animal cruelty. Keep fighting to punish that horrible man. Anne

We just read your tragic story about the death of your beloved dog. How cruel and senseless. The killer should rot in hell! Our thoughts, prayers and support are with you in your court case. Your efforts are beautiful...you are loving and caring people. Thank you from all of us who treasure the relationship of our companion animals as members of our families. BEST OF LUCK TO YOU!

Mr. and Mrs. Scheele, You are doing a wonderful thing for all animals and their guardians. It is time for the courts to realize the true value of companion animals is that they are members of the family...much loved and cherished. There is no price anyone can put on any family member. We fully support you and thank you in your efforts. We are happy to help in any way possible. We sent a letter to you with our contact information. Thank you again. The Rhinehart Family

Dear Denis and Sarah Scheele, You are an amazing couple with tremendous strength and courage to continue to work toward having our courts recognize that the value of pets goes far beyond anything monetary. As members of our families, they bring us joy, love, laughter, comfort, compassion, fun, loyalty, companionship, guardianship...so much more. THANK YOU from everyone who cares about the respect that all animals deserve. You are doing an amazing job and please know that you have a world of support behind you!

Thank you for the wonderful effort you are both making to help so many innocent animals. It is time for the courts to realize the connection shared between pets and their guardian families. We are so sorry that you had to endure the horrible killing of your beloved SHADOW, but know that you are doing a beautiful thing. People like you make this world a better place to live in!

I am so sorry for your loss and I hope that you are able to win this battle in court for shadow, for your own closure, and so this is less likely to happen in the future. Have you contacted the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals? They often enter into court battles to increase animal's rights and protection, maybe they could help. Good Luck!!

Dear Sarah: Thank you for your phone call today. I didn't know about your website until I spoke to you. I am so proud of the work that you are doing and please let me know what I can do to help with the Shadow Law in our state of Florida. You and your husband are amazing and you have a bigger job in life and you are doing. Thank you from all who can't say thank you. Your new friend, and for the animals, Lizanne Quinn www.HarmonyTouch.com

Dear Denis, Sarah & Lucy - I just read the story of Shadow's tragic murder as it was featured on AOL News. Although I cannot contribute money to the cause of justice you seek, I am 100% behind your efforts. I fail to see why the rights of canines are not the same as for humans and they certainly should NOT be categorized as "property"! They are just as important a part of the family as any child and some of us prefer canines and therefore have them as our non-biological children, rather than adopting a human child. I hope before long that the rest of the world will realize that. Best of luck to you in your ongoing legal battles and efforts! Evie (and JJ, my mini-poodle girl)

There are so many angry people in the world. It is unacceptable that this angry man took it out on your dog "Shadow". I am in full support of your case and really do hope that you move on to all the states to change our recognition of dogs as companions- because they really are as precious as children to many of us. If there is anyone I can write to, please let me know. Caren ccarego@aol.com

Dear Scheele Family, I am so sorry to hear about your beautiful Little Boy. What a handsome guy he is. Unfortunately, I am dealing with the loss of a pet myself, my horse, Maya. I can tell you that the time I have spent thinking about all of our wonderful times really comforts my soul. She was my entire life, as I'm sure Shadow was to you, and perhaps Maya is chasing him around a beautiful pasture in heaven. I will be keeping you in my thoughts, stay strong. Remember that you have many pet-loving friends that you don't even know who are cheering for you to win this appeal. The best of luck. Hugs

You know, here I am at work and I stumble upon this tragic incident and I think... What would I do if something like this were to happen to my precious Golden Brandi? Your pursuit in this horrific nightmare brought tears to my eyes along a refreshed love and appreciation for my baby girl who I rescued from an abusive family! She is family! Knowing she would give her life to save mine, I too would do the same for her. Some would think that's silly but to you who think so, I would say love knows no boundaries especially when "family's involved". Your pursuit is just and I appreciate all you have done this far. You make me believe that there is still tenderness and courage in the hearts people these days. My prayers are with you Denis and Sarah Scheele. As for Shadow, you are a beautiful being and it's amazing to me how much you are and will continue to be loved by your mommy and daddy!

You are to be commended on your endless fight to allow pets to be considered as companions, not property. I don't know how I would be able to cope if something were to happen to my German Shorthair or Newfoundland. Like you guys, my husband and I have no children and our dogs are our life. Thank you for bringing the world's attention to this overlooked matter. My husband and I will support your fight!! We've mailed off a donation to your cause. Thank you for your passion! Phillip and Erin Bauersachs ejgballerina@aol.com

I WOULD LIKE TO SAY IAM SO SORRY FOR LOSS. I HAVE DOGS MYSELF AND THEY ARE ALSO MY CHILDREN. I HAVE ALSO SHARE THE HEART OF LOOSING A PET. ALTHOUGH IS WAS BECAUSE OF SOME HEARTLESS JERK.I LOST MYLO TO CANCER. HE WAS A 6YR OLD BORDER COLLIE, AND THE LOVE OF MY LIFE. I AM A SUPPORTER OF PEOPLE WHO ABUSE ANIMALS SHOULD HAVE THE SAMETHING DONE TO THEM. I KNOW IT WILL NOT BRING YOUR SHADOW BACK BUT THAT MAN SHOULD BE PUNISHED AND HOPEFULLY GOD WILL SERVE HIM JUSTICE. GOOD LUCK FOR SHADOWS LAW. LISA IN FLORIDA

Sarah, Denis, Lucy, Sam, and Spirit: Thank you for sharing Shadow's website with us. Although I never knew sweet Shadow...I feel like I do after visiting his website. I cannot imagine the pain that your family has endured. And more so, I cannot imagine what type of individual can commit such a horrific act of violence towards an animal! It's people like you who make this world what it should be for our loving companions. With love, Meredith, Matt, and Kelsee Music

i am so sorry about shadow. i have 3 wonderful furry kids. i see everyday how [eople treat there animals as property. these are souls w/ paws. i will pray for you all everyday.

emanuel

I am so sorry for your loss. I live in Los Angeles ,California. I want to give you a web site of a non-profit organization called In Defense Of Animals. They have been a strong force in the fight against 'proprty' titles with our family members and changing the law to "Companion Animals". www.ida.org .Perhaps they may or can assist you with your struggles. Another is Last Chance For Animals, also in L.A. May your mind rest and your heart find peace. For the animals, Marina Ramos ladytokerz@yahoo.com

I'm a dog control officer for the town of Putnam Valley, N.Y. We are dealing with our own case of animal abuse with a dog named Roxi who wandered onto a neighbors property and was kicked so violently that she crawled under a bush. A few hours later when her owners found her it was too late The case is to go before a Grand Jury at an unknown later date. I would like to see a law passed that would brand animal abusers just like sex offenders. I feel that once someone has been convicted of anamal abuse whether felony or misdermeanor information should be posted alerting the neighborhood that an animal abuser has moved into their area. that way people would be able to monitor their "family members" whereabouts and keep them closer to home. I think Shadows Law is a terrific idea. It's about time animals are viewed as family members and not just property. Patti Smith

Sarah and Denis - We were so moved by this tragic story, and want to help obtain Justice for Shadow. We are outraged by the incident, and see the definite need for Shadow's Law. Pets are companions, children, and provide one thing that most people, such as the man who took your angel cannot: Unconditional Love. There truly needs to be a law in place to persecute people who harm and kill helpless animals unjustly. Shadow has truly already made a huge mark on those who were fortunate enough to know him, and the countless others that have become aware of this tragedy and the good legislation that you are fighting to acheive as a result of his life. He was sent here to help protect other wonderful animals, and we join you in the quest. Rob Gutro and Josh Tingle Odenton, MD

We recently saw your website and are shocked that such a horrible incident could happen with so little consequence to the murderer of your companion animal. We totally support your efforts to seek JUSTICE for SHADOW. We hope the killer suffers as much as your little dog did. Best of luck to you.

To the owner of Wizzer....we are so sorry to learn what happened to your beloved companion. We do not have your email to contact you directly and hope that you read this message. We know exactly how you feel about this horrible tragedy. Our SHADOW was murdered in the state of Vermont while we were visiting. It is not our home state, but we are doing everything we can to create legislation that will recognize pets as "companion guardians" - not mere property. We hope to be able to have a law created that will be called "The SHADOW Law"...first in the state where he was so cruely killed...and then in our home state where he lived so happily. If you would like to email us under the "contact us" section of this website, we will email you some contact information that you may find helpful. Please know that our sympathy is with you and your family. No animal deserves to be murdered and we must change the laws to protect the innocent. As Rachel Carson said so eloquently: "Until we have the courage to recognize cruelty for what it is...whether its victim is human or animal -- we cannot expect things to be much better in this world. We cannot have peace among men whose hearts delight in killing any living creature. By every act that glorifies or even tolerates such moronic delight in killing we set back the progress of humanity." We hope that you will be able to get justice for the killing of your beloved family member. The Scheele Family

my dog wizzer was shot with an arrow 2 weeks ago he later died during surgery to remove the arrow, wizzer had been walking in the woods with me and my 9 yr old daughter in the neighbors woods. wizzer had ran up ahead of us for about a minute or so when we heard him scream out in distress, he then came running over to us with an arrow sticking out of his back. The hunter was a fifteen year old grandson of the property owner. He left the woods without even an offer to help us carry wizzer out. The authorities will not do anything about this incident, and it saddens me deeply to know that my dog was murdered and no one will do anything about it,

I continue to support you in your efforts to get justice for your dog. The law that you are trying to create is a good one and is needed in every state. You and your family are good role models for defending the innocent and helpless animals. My best wishes and appreciation for all that you are doing for Shadow and others. JN

Hello, We just viewed your website and are so sorry for your loss. You are very brave to work so hard turning a horrible tragedy into a law that will help others. SHADOW has a very loving family. People as cruel as the man that killed an innocent little dog do not deserve to enjoy any of life's privileges. Hopefully, the SHADOW Law will be created to enforce strong legislation against animal cruelty. We wish you luck and support you in your valiant efforts.

I can think of no one so very, very worthy of their dog's love and devotion as you and your family. Your continued pursuit to find justice for SHADOW is wonderful. May God bless you! W.R.

"He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion." Kimberly I. Riley

Hello Scheele Family, We wish you well in your crusade to seek JUSTICE FOR SHADOW. How could anyone be so cruel to kill an innocent little dog...or any animal? The man who killed SHADOW should be in jail! Thank you for continuing to make our world safer from people like SHADOW'S killer! We hope that you are successful!

I hope that Shadows law is doing good! I know a lot of people pray for that sweet little dog and hopefully it all turns out well.

Hello Sarah & Denis, We just wanted to say hello and to see how you are doing. It is hard to believe that is has been a year since Shadow has been gone, we are so sorry and continue to keep him and your family in our thoughts and prayers. love you! love, Jenny & Jim

Sarah, We will be thinking of all of you on the 19th. Words can not express how sorry we have been for you all. Hope the day isn't too difficult for you. Love, Ann

Just reading your tribute to Shadow broke my heart. What a precious dog. God Bless you, your husband, and Lucy as you try to get on with your lives. I pray that the laws will eventually be changed, and what happened to Shadow happens to no other beloved animal. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Judi Colby Salem, NH

Dear Sarah, Dennis, Spirit, Lucy and Sammy,

My heartfelt wishes to you at this very saddest of times. The good that you are doing in Shadow's name makes him live in our hearts, even in the hearts of those who never knew him. It is a fitting tribute to him.

Healing hugs and kisses from me, woofs and shnuggles from Bear and Tobey.

Rachel

It is hard to believe it has been a year. I trust Shadow is watching over you all and knows how much you miss him. I am also sure he is so proud of his parents for their hard work and perseverance to change the laws to better protect other loving companions like Shadow.

Dear Scheele Family,

We just learned of the tragic killing of your beautiful dog SHADOW. Your website is a beautiful memorial to a loving member of your family. We commend you on your quest to seek justice for the senseless murder of an innocent creature. The killer is a pitiful excuse for a human being. The killer is a mean, bitter, cruel and hateful man. He does not deserve to have any peace of mind for his actions. We totally support you in your efforts to stand up for SHADOW. Perhaps taking a strong stand in creating stricter penalties for violators of the law will end animal cruelty. Mr. Dustin should be sitting in jail - not out in the community where he poses a threat to other innocent animals.

Continued efforts such as yours will make this world a safer place to live in...and greater respect for "man's best friend."

God Bless You

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Scheele,

What a horrible and tragic loss of a beautiful and innocent animal. What kind of SICK person could be so cruel? The killer is a worthless idiot and should rot in hell for this crime!

You must seek comfort in knowing that you gave SHADOW an amazing life with your family...for ever so short a time...and that every day he was blessed with your love.

Our support and best wishes are with you in seeking justice and hopefully punishing Mr. Dustin to the fullest extent of the law and beyond.

I am so sorry for your devastating loss. Please don't take the mean emails to heart. Just ignore them. And know that Shadow is happy in Heaven waiting for you to join him someday. The man who shot Shadow should be ashamed of himself. Good luck with your lawsuit.

My condolences on losing Shadow. I read your story and was disgusted! Why would anyone hurt an innocent dog, or any animal for that matter. My prayers are with you and your husband. I hope that Lucy's heart mends soon. I lost my golden retriever, Lucy (great name) to cancer, and my basset, Morgan, was heartbroken until I got my Brittany, Lilly. I was a little stand-offish with Lilly because I felt it was a betrayal to Lucy. But as time progressed, we all fell in love and now I can't imagine my life without her. We have to keep our deceased babies alive in our memories always. Shadow was lucky to have you and now she is your angel until you meet again.

I hope your fight in civil court comes up with a favorable result!

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Scheele. I read with sadness the horrific story of your beautiful baby Shadow. I can't imagine what you are going through as I feel the same kind of bonding with my daughter Carly who is twelve and a Chesapeake who I have owned since she was five weeks old. I am outraged to think that there are such cruel human beings who can act upon these poor innocent beautiful living creatures that bring us such joy and comfort daily. Please know all my thoughts and prayers are with you at this time of hardship.

I read about Shadow in Monday's Boston Globe. I am so sorry for your horrible, horrible, and unnecessary loss. I hope the monster who did this never has a moments peace of mind, and that he pays dearly for what he has done to this beautiful boy. My sympathy to you and your family. Sincerely, Monica Branley Boston, MA

I am so sorry for your loss of this beautiful dog.

How irresponsible to have someone that killed an animal to do community
service at an animal shelter. I pray for those animals.

It makes me very sorry for people who do not understand the love of an
animal, they will never know the fulfilling love that they give.

God bless Shadow, may he be running with his ears streaming back with my
 Otto.

 Sincerely, B.G., Plymouth, MA

I write this email with tears in my eyes because I am feeling pain for you
both and for Lucy. I cannot fathom how anyone could so callously shoot
something that wasn't hurting anyone or anything, what is wrong with this
world. He calls himself a caring grandfather, how would his grandchildren
feel about what he did. My husband and I are grandparents and if I did that
I would not be able to look them in the eye. Just find comfort in the fact
that Shadow had more love in his short life than lots of kids have their
entire childhood. He is beautiful, he looks exactly like a dog that my
daughter and son-in-law used to have, her name was Misty and we loved her,
too. I am an animal lover also and just lost our beloved Black Lab, Jasper
and I still feel that pain. I have another dog that I rescued, a beautiful
little Sheltie named Nina. My advice is to go out and rescue another dog
that needs what you have to offer. There are so many of them out there and
though it could never take Shadow's place, you will love it just as much in
it's own way and it will be very therapeutic and healing to your souls. God
Bless You both and keep up the good work that you are doing.

wouldn't know what to do if anything happened to her! I want to say I'm so
terribly sorry 4 your loss but he is in a better place know and when u die
you'll see your baby once more!!! God bless you!!!

I live in Vermont & read about your tragedy in yesterday's paper. While it
is true that Shadow should have been on a leash, I CANNOT fathom why this
man would shoot at a dog 5 feet away from him, who was not even making a
sound. He didn't mean to kill him? What kind of person kills innocent
animals like this? I support your family & your decision to pursue this as
far as you can. You have my deepest sympathies.

Dear Sarah, Denis, and Lucy, I just want you to know how much I support you
in the death of Shadow. I am so sorry to read about it. I back you 100%. I
have 3 Cocker Spaniels myself, Sadie, Jaz, and Chilli. They are my world
too. My favorite TV station is Animal Planet. I would tell you right now,
that if I ever saw anyone trying to hurt my family intentionally, I know I
would physically hurt them in a rage. Some people just don't understand how
we can become so involved with our family members. One of my friends once
quipped,,,"I like these dogs more than I like most people". And I really
understood what he meant. The love our pets give us unconditionally is
something I'm always trying to give back. They are so far ahead of me in
that dept. So please remember the great loving times you gave Shadow and
also what you received from him. Again, I'm so sorry for your loss. Frank

Dear Denis and Sarah: I am truly saddened by the horrible and tragic death
of your beloved child. Although I too have lost precious pets because of the
cruelty of others, I will not say I understand how you feel. However, I will
offer your family my deepest sympathies and condolences. And don't let
anyone tell you you're over the top for loving your pet and mourning him in
the way you are. In my heart I believe all our pets are our children and it
is only natural to mourn them when lose them.

Hi there folks, I am so very sorry to hear about what happened to your
beloved Shadow. What happened to him is terrible and sickening. Just because
he ACCIDENTALLY got loose does NOT mean that anybody has the right to abuse or
kill an animal. I used to have a cockapoo that lived to 20 years old, and
now I have a 4 year old cocker spaniel. I know what it means to feel the way
you folks do about your dog. I will never have children and my dog is my
child. Plain and simple I only wish there were more people like you in this
world. Your Shadow deserves justice. God bless you and your precious Shadow.

Hello! Your sad story was just sent to my by a close friend and fellow
animal lover. I also have 2 dogs and many parrots for pets. They eat off my
plate and sleep with me. I also arrange my schedule around them as I am
their devoted momma. I live in central Vt and have also had a beloved pet
shot and killed for being on a farmer's land just playing! I cried for your
grief, as I have been there my friends. Please know I am sending prayers and
my deepest condolences to you and also to your 'daughter'. I love these
babies as if they were human as they are to me! Know you are in my prayers
and and sending you Love from Vermont! Chris LaRock

I am truly sorry for your loss of Shadow. My dog is my best friend, and I
truly understand your pain. I will keep you, Shadow, and Lucy in my prayers.

What happened to Shadow is unthinkable. I fully support your civil lawsuit
against the man who took Shadow's life. I hope you succeed in taking away
his financial freedom, since the criminal court failed to take away his
liberty. He should have been convicted of a felony and be forced to forfeit
his right to own guns. Perhaps your lawsuit will send a message that
companion animals are members of a family, and to carelessly take a dog's
life is no different than taking the life of a child.

I offer the following in memory of Shadow:

 The Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal
dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to
Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends
so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and
sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor.
Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we
remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy
and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special
to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops
and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body
quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green
grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet,
you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy
kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and
you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from
your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

 Author unknown...

 God Bless, -Craig

I can understand your heartbreak.... I am also an avid animal lover ...dogs
are first in my life and I feel that the man who killed your dog ; deserves
more than what he got in fines and jail term.....he shot the dog and killed
it, which was unnecessary.....he could have just yelled to chase it away....we
must continue to make your case stronger to make an example of this man ...
there is no excuse as to why he shot the dog or what his family says he is a
wonderful man ... he shot the dog ..period...avenge shadows death by making
the laws stronger and better to knock down animal abusers of all
sorts.....to protect all dogs /cats and all heavens creature from further
 cruelties by john q public....

Dear Sarah, Denis, and Lucy, My sister in law sent this to me and after
reading this story I am so sorry for your loss! I am so upset that this
person would do this to such a sweet dog, and looking at his picture for all
this time you can tell he was! My family and I had a dog named Mikey, we had
him since he was 8 weeks old, he was a sweet black and white border collie.
On Thanksgiving 1998 my parents landlord and his brother lured Mikey away
from the house and beat him to death and left him on the side of the road to
make it look like he was hit by a car. My parents were having trouble with
this guy and that was his way of getting my parents to move so he could sell
the house. My mom was the one who found him and took Mikey to the vet for an
autopsy and the vet said Mikey was most likely beaten with a bat because
most of his bones were broken. Because no one saw the landlord do this he
was never brought to justice but my parents know the landlord did it because
he threatened my parents about Mikey. I pray that you will get justice for
Shadow and will try to do all I can to support you all. I will never forget
Mikey and what a wonderful dog he was, just as I am sure Shadow was for all
of you. I am praying for you all! Sincerely, Shelli Willey

I'm in tears now, just having read most of "The Story."

I am so sorry for your loss. I believe people who hurt animals should be
punished as though they hurt human beings. I know not all agree with me, but
 that's how I feel.

Good luck to you as you pursue justice for your little guy.

 Best wishes, Marcia Magus

 Sarah, Denis and Lucy-

We're so sorry to hear about SHADOW. He was such a special guy. Spike really
enjoyed his visits to the screened porch (Spike really misses that porch!).
Scarlett and Nala would flirt with him from the safety of the window sills.

While your lives- all our lives- were blessed with his zest for life, he,
too, was blessed to have found such a happy, loving home in which to spend
 so many happy days.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you!

Lots of love, Rose and Jack

I would like to voice my support for the Scheele family regarding their dog,
SHADOW who was shot to death while visiting your state. I'm a retired mail
carrier who knew the Scheele family and their dogs well. Both dogs were
adopted from a shelter and given a home where they were loved and cared for.
They were gentle, friendly dogs to all who knew them. The fact that one of
them was so cruelly and callously gunned down is a horrible crime and should
be treated as such. It has caused these wonderful people so much pain and
hurt, even now four months later. I hope that you and the state of Vermont
will treat this as a serious felony crime and prosecute the individual
responsible to the fullest extent of the law.

 Sincerely, Ronald Bouchane

 Dear Mr. Trono:

I was very upset to learn of the senseless and cruel death of SHADOW. I am
urging you to upgrade the charge to a felony. Not only was this an egregious
act of animal cruelty but the owner's life was also endangered. Please see
to it that Lewis Dustin receives jail time and is also banned from owning a
 firearm.

The world is watching this case and your reaction to this despicable act.

 Sincerely, Marlene G. Titus

Dear Mr. Trono, My friends Denis and Sara Scheele and their two beloved
family dogs were on their way to a family gathering in Vermont when they
stopped in a church parking lot to feed, water and play with the dogs. After
hearing a pop, they were horrified to see their beloved dog SHADOW yelping
and jumping into their arms. The shepherd-chow-spaniel mix had been shot by
a man who lives near the church. SHADOW died in pain, gasping for breath for
over 20 minutes during the ride to a hospital.

I understand, the alleged shooter, Lewis Dustin, 77, has been charged with
misdemeanor cruelty to animals. He still has possession of his gun.

Arraignment is set for August 28, 2003. We are writing to ask Mr. Dustin be
charged with felony-level cruelty for causing undue suffering to the dog in
this fatal incident, that he further be charged with reckless endangerment
for shooting in the direction of the people in the church parking lot, he be
required to serve time in jail for his crime and he be prohibited from
 possessing firearms.

My husband Tom and I are horrified to know there are people out there with
guns, killing innocent animals. This is inhumane and must stop. I hope you
will consider the trauma, pain and suffering this has caused as you review
 this crime.

Respectfully, Sarah Bonner and Tom Bowes Bethesda, MD

Sarah, I am sorry to hear about your loss, SHADOW was my favorite of the
two, please say an extra prayer for me during the service. I hope that you
and Dennis will rebound from this tragedy, and take on a new dog. Perhaps a
puppy, so that you can experience the part of SHADOW's life before he became
part of your family. I will keep you and Dennis in my prayers.

 your friend,

 Sarah and Denis,

Tommy and I were so sorry to hear about your dear SHADOW. What happened is
terrible and we hope justice is served to this perfectly awful person. Both
of you, Lucy and especially SHADOW are in our thoughts and prayers.

 Love,

 Sarah and Tommy

PS I regret I'm out of town and will miss SHADOW's Memorial Service. We will
be thinking of all of you on Saturday. xox

Hi Sarah (and Denis and Lucy) I am so saddened to hear about SHADOW - what a
wonderful dog he was, and such a love! I can't believe how horrible people
can be, can't even begin to imagine that anyone would just shoot a dog like
 that.

I know how much you loved him and when I got your email, I immediately
thought about the sweet picture you had of SHADOW and Binky wrapped up in
blankets and tucked in for the night. I will miss him, too, as he and Binky
 had a special connection.

SHADOW and Binky are romping together now and watching over us, of that I am
 sure.

Losing a pet is probably the hardest thing, because we know that, unlike
children, they are more temporary on this earth than we are. You are very
special people to have the love, energy and courage to take on a pet with
such vigor as you did SHADOW, rescuing him from whatever difficult life he
had before you came along. He was one of the happiest of dogs, and I will
remember his big smiling face always.

Know that you are in my thoughts, Love each other, Love Lucy, be brave - you
 are special dog parents!

 Hugs, ~Leslie

Sarah, we returned last night from Massachusetts. We haven't stopped

Take care and I'll be in touch.

 Love, Ann

 Sarah, Denis, and Lucy,

I would like to express my deepest sympathy for your loss. I loved SHADOW
too, and will miss having him around when I come to visit. I know you all
love SHADOW very much, and I'm sure you'll always have a empty void in your
life with him gone. I am at a loss for words. I can't begin to imagine your
pain during this horrible time. My prayers are with you all and SHADOW.
Again, my deepest sympathy. And my deepest gratitude for SHADOW's life that
brought joy and love to our lives through his playful and caring heart.

 love, Sara

Dear Sarah and Denis, We are so very sorry to hear about what happened to
SHADOW. I can't tell you how upset we are for you all. I have been trying to
call for a couple of days and not getting you or your machine. Are you all
right? We will do whatever you want us to do, just let us know if anything
 comes to mind.

 Love, Ann and Bob

Oh my God, Sarah! That is so terrible. I just cannot believe that sweet boy
is gone - and shot at that! There just are not words to convey my feelings.
I'm sitting here crying at the PC. My thoughts are with you all.

Thanks for the pictures of Lucy and SHADOW; I shall keep them always.

 Love always, Julie
